Successful roll-out of new Zero-Void Monostrand System

Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport is undergoing a 10-year $4.4 billion (Canadian) redevelopment program in order to meet the growing demands of air traffic and cargo movement.

A major part of the airport’s redevelopment is the Terminal Development Project. Obsolete Terminals 1 and 2 will be replaced by a new single terminal building, which is capable of handling 50 million passengers per year. A new parking garage with a capacity of handling 12,500 vehicles and road access system is part of the package.

DYWIDAG Multiplane MA bonded multistrand tendons, best known for their efficient design and compact size, were selected for the cast-inplace beams in order to fit into highly congested reinforcing steel. For the first time Zero-Void unbonded monostrand tendons were used in the cast-in-place slabs of the parking structure. The key benefits of the Zero-Void system are its superior corrosion protection quality meeting stringent water-tightness tests and its ease of installation.
